The Langtang valley is aptly called “the valley of glaciers”. Here, mountains rise soaring towards the sky. The valley offers pine forest, swift mountain streams, rugged rock and snow- capped peaks, grassy downs and meadows strewn with daisies and wild primulas. In the upper part of the valley there are snow ridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, tiny lakes of crystalline brightness and glaciated mountain giants. Our trek begins with a 7 hour drive to Syabru Bensi. Initially we are trekking through a sub-tropical jungle, then a dense forest of oak, birch and pine before the valley opens out into alpine meadows and yak pastures. In the spring these high meadows are carpeted with a rich variety of alpine wild flowers also the forests are also in full bloom with rare tree orchids and the colorful rhododendron, Nepal’s national flower, also a spring highlight. The Langtang forests are also well known for their wildlife, including red pandas, Himalayan black bear, wild boar and langur monkeys – you are likely to see packs of these monkeys between Syabru and Ghora Tabela. Beyond Langtang village is the summer settlement of Kyanjin with its small gompa and cheese factory. Our camp here amongst yak pastures, dominated by the fluted north west face of Kangchenpo, whilst Kyangjin Ri at 4708m provides a splendid viewpoint. The views from here are as spectacular as anywhere in the Himalaya, a 360 degree panorama of snow capped including the awesome Langtang Lirung, Pemthang Ri, Langshisha Ri, Dorje Lakpa, and Kangchenpo, Tilman\’s fluted peak. Descending from the upper Langtang Valley, we retrace the route back to Syabru then take the slightly quicker way out via Syabru Bensi and drive to Kathmandu.

Leaving the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu behind, your journey into the Himalaya begins with a scenic drive to Syabrubesi, a lovely village on the banks of the Bhote Khola. At the top of the Kathmandu valley the views extend west as far as the Annapurnas and Manaslu. As you drop down into the Trisuli valley you’ll pass through terraced hillsides to Trisuli Bazaar, where an exciting, narrow road traverses several ridges to reach the small town of Syabru Besi (1400m) via Dhunche (1970M).

DAY 04: TREK TO LAMA HOTEL (2,380M/7,808FT) 5-6 HRS

From Syabru Besi you start your trek to Lama Hotel. The trail crosses the Bhote Khola using a suspension bridge and continues east. You encounter the Langtang Khola which will be your companion all the way to Kyanjin Gompa. The trail starts as a moderate climb and zig-zags up the broad valley. Continuing up, you will see the village of Thulo Syabru clinging to the high valley side. Shortly after you will join a trail which leads to (and from) Thulo Syabru. You will then enter a deep gorge which signifies the start of the Langtang valley. From here you will start a steady descent through a bamboo forest to the valley floor. Red pandas and Langur monkeys inhabit this forest. Upon reaching the Langtang Khola you will follow it up stream. Passing through the hamlet of Pairo you will reach the village of Bamboo. This village is situated on the riverside and the trail here is constantly having to be rebuilt due to the river flooding and washing the trail away. After an hour or so you will cross a bridge to the northern side of the river and pass through the village of Rimche. Shortly after this you will briefly climb out of the forest to reach the village of Lama hotel. Overnight.
5

DAY 05: TREK TO LANGTANG (3,500M/11,482FT) 5-6 HOURS

After a short while the mighty peak of Langtang Lirung comes into view from the north. Passing a waterfall you continue up the west bank of the Langtang Khola and pass through the hamlet of Gumnchok. After a couple of hours the valley begins to widen and the trail flattens. You pass through Ghoda Tabela which means “stable of the horse”. You will trek past a National Park checkpoint and then cross a small wooden bridge and continue through the forest. Many villagers in this area advertise the local “yak curd” – you could try some here! Around 10,335ft/3,150m you climb above the tree-line. Approaching Langtang you will see a 400 year old Buddhist gompa (monastery) on your left and a few minutes later you climb into Langtang village itself.
6

DAY 06: TREK TO KYANGJIN GOMPA (3,800M/12,467FT) 3 HRS.

To the east you will gain great views of the peak “Dorji Lakpa” with “Urkinmang” to its left. Also to the south, the peaks of “Naya Kanga” and “Pongen Dopku” will come into view. After a steep, undulating trail you will cross a rise and Kyangjin Gompa will appear.
7

DAY 07: REST AND EXPLORATION DAY. DAY HIKE TO KYANGJIN RI. 4-5 HRS

Kyangjin Gompa lies in an elongated amphitheatre surrounded by high, snow-capped peaks. While you are here you may want to explore the local area. It is possible to climb the small hill to the north of the village at the height of about 14,107ft/4m. This offers great views of Langtang Lirung (23,765ft/7,245m), the Langtang glacier, Kimshing peak with its glacier and to the south, a long ridge on top of which is the Ganja La, a high pass to Helambu. Alternatively you could continue east to the valley and visit the Lagshisha glacier which marks the end of the Langtang valley. A hike to Chergo La has the best mountain view.
8

DAY 08: TREK TO BAMBOO (1900M/6230FT) 5-6 HRS
