Langtang Himalayas are within easy reach of Kathmandu and yet remains Nepal’s hidden treasures with far less tourist traffic than the Everest and Annapurna regions. In Langtang, people are from Tibetan origin. Lama, Sherpa and Gurung are main ethnic groups.

Kyanjing Gompa is surrounded by Mt. Langtang Lirung (7245m) on the west, Yala Peak on the north, Dorje Lhakpa (6966m), Urkeinmang (6387m), Loenpo Gang (6979m) and Kangchenpo on the northeast. In Kyanjing Village, there is a small Buddhist monastery and a cheese factory started in 1955 by the Swiss Association for Technical Assistance which, unfortunately, is closed now.

Langtang Valley (the valley of glaciers) opens out into alpine meadows as well as yak pastures and offers pine forest, swift mountain streams, rugged rock and snow- capped peaks, grassy downs and meadows strewn with daisies and wild primulas. The Langtang forests are also well known for their wildlife, including red pandas, Himalayan black bear, and wild boar and langur monkeys. Beyond Langtang village is the summer settlement of Kyanjin with its small gompa and cheese factory. Our camp here amongst yak pastures, dominated by the fluted north west face of Kangchenpo, whilst Kyangjin Ri at 4510m provides a splendid viewpoint for Langtang Lirung, Pemthang Ri, Langshisha Ri, Dorje Lakpa, and Kangchenpo, Tilman’s fluted peak. Descending from the upper Langtang Valley, we retrace the route back to Lama Hotel then take the slightly quicker way out via Bamboo and trek up to Thulo Syabru village for the bonus side trip to the holy lakes of Gosainkunda at 4380m.

1

Drive to Syabru Besi (1470m), 7-8 Hrs, Trek Further 1 Hr

Our journey into the Himalaya begins with a scenic drive to the commercial town of Syabru Besi. At the top of the Kathmandu valley the views extend west as far as the Annapurnas and Manaslu. As you drop down into the Trisuli valley you’ll pass through terraced hillsides to Trisuli Bazaar, where an exciting, narrow road traverses several ridges to reach the small town of Syabru Besi (1400m).
Kathmandu -Kerung highway passes through Syabrubesi and connects to the Nepal -Tibet border town of Kyirong (Gyirong). The only entry point for international tourists to visit Central and Western Tibet (North Everest Base Camp, Mt. Kailash and Lhasa). Since the Syabrubesi is the typical Nepali or Chinese bazaar, we trek further to the beautiful local trekking lodge next to the waterfall for 45 min to 1 hr. The trail crosses the Bhote Khola using a suspension bridge and continues east to encounter the Langtang Khola.

2

Trek to Lama Hotel (2470m), 5-6 Hrs

The trail starts as a moderate climb and zig-zags up the broad valley following the Langtang Khola all the way to Kyanjin Gompa. Continuing up, you will see the village of Thulo Syabru clinging to the high valley side. The trail enter a deep gorge which signifies the start of the Langtang valley with a steady descent through a bamboo forest to the valley floor. Red pandas and Langur monkeys inhabit this forest. Upon reaching the Langtang Khola you will follow it up stream. Passing through the hamlet of Pairo you will reach the village of Bamboo. This village is situated on the riverside and the trail here is constantly having to be rebuilt due to the river flooding and washing the trail away. After an hour or so, we cross a bridge to the northern side of the river, pass through the village of Rimche, briefly climb out of the forest to reach the village of Lama hotel.

3

Trek to Langtang Village (3300m), 4-5 HRS

Leaving Lama Hotel Village you continue your climb up the Langtang Valley. The area here is still forested and again you might catch a glimpse of a red panda. After a short while the mighty peak of Langtang Lirung comes into view from the north. Passing a waterfall you continue up the west bank of the Langtang Khola and pass through the hamlet of Gumnchok. After a couple of hours the valley begins to widen and the trail flattens. You pass through Ghoda Tabela which means “stable of the horse”. You will trek past a National Park checkpoint and then cross a small wooden bridge and continue through the forest. Many villagers in this area advertise the local “yak curd” – you could try some here! Around 10,335ft/3,150m you climb above the tree-line. Approaching Langtang you will see a 400 year old Buddhist gompa (monastery) on your left and a few minutes later you climb into Langtang village itself.

4

Trek to Kyanjin Village (3,730m), 4-5 Hrs.

From Langtang you continue up the ever-widening valley to Kyanjin Gompa. After passing through the Upper Langtang village you will walk past a series of long mani walls. To the east you will gain great views of the peak “Dorji Lakpa” with “Urkinmang” to its left. Also to the south, the peaks of “Naya Kanga” and “Pongen Dopku” will come into view. After a steep, undulating trail you will cross a rise and Kyangjin Gompa will appear.

5

Morning Hike to Kyanjin Ri (4510m). Trek back to Ghoda Tabela (3035m), 6-7 Hrs

Kyangjin Gompa lies in an elongated amphitheater surrounded by high, snow-capped peaks. While you are here you may want to explore the local area. It is possible to climb the small hill to the north of the village at the height of 4510m. This offers great views of Langtang Lirung (7,245m), the Langtang glacier, Kimshing peak with its glacier and to the south, a long ridge on top of which is the Ganja La, a high pass to Helambu. Alternatively you could continue east to the valley and visit the Lagshisha glacier which marks the end of the Langtang valley. A hike to Chergo La has the best Mountain View. Trek back to Ghoda Tabela via Kyanjin Gompa and Langtang Village.

6

Trek to Thulo Syabru (2250m), 6-7 Hrs

The trail descend down to Pairo (Landslide) via Lama Hotel and Bamboo village before ascend to Thulo Syabru Village. En route, we may see red pandas, monkey and various species of birds. Thulo Syabru Village is a long and big village, top half consists small hotels and lodges while the lower part of the village is full of traditional Tamang village. This village is a perfect village of learning about the influence of Tibetan Buddhism in the Tamangs living.

7

Trek to Sano Bharkhu, 2.5 Hrs. Drive to Kathmandu, 5-6 Hrs

After breakfast, trek in the flatter trail for 2.5 hours to the trailhead of Sano Bharkhu at where our transportation is waiting for us to take us to Kathmandu for seven hours. Trip ends!
