FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO JORSALLE (2805M/9200FT) VIA PHAKDING (2610M/8560FT) 5-6 HRS

An early departure from the Kathmandu domestic airport will see us landing in Lukla a mere 35 minutes later, at the start of our journey to the Mount Everest Base Camp. This is one of the most spectacular and one of the 10th extreme flights in the world. As you fly east, the snow line of the Himalayan range to the north, will be on your left, with the rugged foothills of Nepal immediately below and stretching away to the south on your right. Lukla is situated high above the river on a shelf at 2,800m, and arriving there is a one off experience because the runway is on a slope and there is a difference of almost 60 metres between its lower and upper ends which all makes for an interesting landing! On arrival you can have a cup of tea to warm yourself up while your staffs sort out your baggage. Following cup of tea at Lukla, our trek will commence with a moderate walk to the junction of the Jiri trail at Chablung and from here we shall follow the DudhKoshi River through the village of Ghat, and eventually to Phakding (2610m), three hours to the north. The path leads upstream along the valley, through areas of conifer trees and several more small villages. Another 2-3 hours walking will bring you to Chuma, Monjo and finally to Jorsalle, a picturesque village with several options of lodges, groceries and located below Thamserku Mountain (6,608m) at an altitude of 2805m/9200ft. We are trekking inside Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park the UNESCO listed Natural World Heritage Site already.

4

TREK TO KHUMJUNG (3790M/12430FT) VIA NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440M/11280FT) 6 HRS

A principal benefit of walking as far as Jorsalle on the first day is that you can walk up the steep hill to Namche. Since Namche is a stopover of every tourist, overnight stop at Khumjung is smart idea of avoiding touristic crowd of Namche as well as option of acclimatization. Shortly after leaving Jorsalle, we walk on alongside the river to arrive at the confluence of the ImjaDrangka and the NangpoDrangpo, which combine to form the DudhKhosi. Crossing the river on a high bridge you start the steep climb to Namche. Near the halfway point up the hill, we catch our first glimpse of the mighty Mount Everest and Lhotse, away to the northeast.Namche is the largest and most prosperous village in the Khumbu. Thamserku (6,608m) and Kwangde (6,224m) loom to the east and west and the sacred mountain Khumbila (5,707m) dominates the skyline to the north behind the village. The narrow streets at its centre are a mixture of traditional and modern, with Sherpa homes mingled with cafes, handicraft shops and shops selling or renting trekking and climbing equipment, foodstuffs and vegetables, tennis shoes and Tibetan boots. Don’t be surprised if, after the exertion of the climb and the rise in elevation, you feel a little tired and head-ache. You will feel better after a cup of tea and a rest. Overnight lodge.

5

REST DAY AND ACCLIMATIZATION DAY

In order to assist with acclimatization, we will spend another day Khumjung. This rest day would be good for acclimatization as you would end up sleeping lower than you have climbed during the day – it is a mantra of good acclimatization to ‘climb high, sleep low’. Everest View Hotel is perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea or a hot lemon while looking out at Everest and other Himalayan giants whereas visiting the clinic in Khunde and the Khumjung School to observe Hillary’s work (supported by the Himalayan Trust) on Khumbu region is other stuff to do. The picturesque Gompa in Khumjung, set in a grove of trees above the houses of the village, is also well worth a visit which is famous for so-called yeti scalp. It is possible to climb the ridge above Khunde, to 4,238m, to view Mount Everest and Ama Dablam. You could also visit the memorial to Sir Edmund Hillary’s wife and daughter who were tragically killed in an air accident. Overnight lodge.

6

TREK TO DOLE (4200M/14295FT) 5-6 HRS

Over the next two days, we will gain quite a height. After leaving Khumjung, we ascent up quite high at 4000M then dropped all the way down to the village of PhortseTenga which is located in the bank of DudhKoshi River. After having a lunch at this village, we start climbing another three hours through beautiful rhododendron forest anad large herds of grazing yak. Dole is next town at where you stop for overnight.Overnight lodge.

7

TREK TO MACHHERMA (4480M/14695FT) 4-5 HRS

After breakfast, we climb to the view point next to Dole village from where we will have first sight of world’s fifth sixth highest peak Mount Cho Oyu (8201M/26900FT). The trail climbs up through the village of Lapharma and Luza to Machhermu where we are going to sleep tonight. Overnight lodge.

8

TREK TO GOKYO (4790M/15710FT) 5-6 HRS

Machhermu –Gokyo Village. Our journey is going to be memorable, with spectacular views down the valley to Kangtega and up toward Cho Oyu, passing the Ngozumpa Glacier and taking a steep narrow staircase trail to the simply stunning, turquoise Gokyo Lakes. We spend the night at Gokyo, a picturesque village on the shores of the largest lake known as DudhPokhari. Overnight lodge.

9

AT GOKYO: CLIMB GOKYO RI & EXPLORE AROUND FORTH LAKE: 6-7 HRS

Climb to GokyoRi to observe whole panoramic views of Khumbu (Everest) Himalayan range with sun rays. It’s an early start as we climb to the summit of GokyoRi (5463m/17920ft) to watch the sunrise over a stunning vista of the regions 8000M peaks including the mighty Everest. Later, we hike up few lakes higher from Gokyo. Overnight lodge.

10

TREK TO THANGNAK/DRAGNAK (4790M/15710FT) VIA CROSSING NANGJUMA GLACIER 3-4 HRS

The trail ascends from Gokyofor half an hour to enter down to the Ngozumba Glacier (possibly world’s longest glacier) which forms from Cho Oyu and come as down as to Fang and turns into river to meet in LobucheKhola, ImjaKhola and becomes a big DudhKoshi River. Walking through amazing ice formation, dirt, dusts and rocks is tiring but one of an amazing experience of the day. Overnight lodge.

11

TREK TO DZONGLA (4800M/15745FT) VIA CHOLA PASS (5330M/17485FT) 7-8 HRS (A,B,L,D)

We start our trek early morning as it’s big and long day to cross Chola Pass! The trail climbs to the hill (5110M) for about two hours before descending down to Chola Pass Phedi (5010M) from where you will see the caravan of trekkers struggling themselves climbing towards the pass far – far in distance. It will take another two hours to attempt the Chola Pass after the hill. After taking few pictures and wandering around the top, we descend down to Dzongla and arrive the town in next three hours. Overnight lodge.

12

TREK TO GORAKSHEP (5110M/16760FT) 6-7 HRS

Chances of bouncing back all of these cold and fatigue from yesterday is high if you don’t get one while ascending to Chola Pass or descending down to Dzongla. Two hours further walking, we catch busy Everest trail to reach Lobuche, probably our lunch spot. From Lobuche you head north-east, along the side of the Khumbu Glacier through jumbled moraine and shattered rock. There is almost no vegetation here. Even so, small coveys of the delightful Tibetan Snow Cock can often be seen along the way or heard calling from the hillsides. You make several energetic ups and downs across the moraine and descend to GorakShep. Gorakshep is our base to attempt Kalapathar and Everest Base Camp since both of places doesn’t have lodge settlement. We may climb Kalapathar to observe sunset view if weather is perfect and you have energy enough to climb another five hundreds meter. Overnight lodge.

13

CLIMB TO KALAPATHAR (5600M/18368FT) MORNING AND HIKE TO EVEREST BASE CAMP (5364M/17595FT) AFTERNOON, 8-9 HRS (A,B,L,D)

One busy day to wake up early in the morning to catch sunrise view from Kalapathar if we couldn’t do sunset view from Kalapathar last evening. If the skies clear, we ascend five hundreds metre to Kalapathar from where we have 360-degree magnificent views across to Everest, looking down over the Base Camp area. An early start is essential to get there before any cloud comes down and it will probably be very cold when you set off. Make sure to have something for breakfast even if you don’t feel like it as you will need the energy! You are at high altitude so take some snacks to keep you going along the way and be sure to have your water bottle filled when you set off. From GorakShep to Kala Patar (4 hours return trek). Although not far this next stage is a tough ascent of approximately 3 hours until you finally reach the rocky summit of KalarPattar at 5,600m – quite literally the high-point of your trek! From here there are great views of the summit of Everest as well as other Himalayan giants – Pumori (7,145m), the Tibetan peak Changtse (7,501m), Nuptse, Lhotse and countless other needles and snow fluted ridges. You can also look down on the Khumbu glacier where base camp is located during the climbing season in late spring. to Everest Base Camp for close-up views of Khumbu&Nuptse Icefall, Khumbu&Nuptse Glacier and most importantly, tick on your checklist that you made base of the top of the world. Make sure to have something for breakfast even if you don’t feel like it as you will need the energy! You are at high altitude so take some snacks to keep you going along the way and be sure to have your water bottle filled when you set off. From GorakShep it is a long, fairly arduous trek to base camp, initially following the top of the moraine and then descending onto the boulder-strewn glacier. In the climbing season you may follow mountaineering groups, or yaks carrying supplies, but at other times there are just a series of small cairns along the route. There are no views of apex of Everest from Base Camp, just close-up views of the terrifying Khumbuice-fall since the Khumbu Icefall obstructs the summit of Everest. After taking some photos and spending some half an hour, we head back to Gorakshep. Overnight Lodge.

14

TREK TO PANGBOCHE (3985M/13070FT) 7-8 HRS (A,B,L,D)

After breakfast, we start our walk quite early because you don’t feel like staying even half an hour more there. Tracing our own feet down to Lobuche through Pumori Glacier and the trail branches off to Thukla and finally descending down to Pheriche to breathe enough oxygen. After lunch, we walk another three hours down to Pangboche through Shomare, enjoying beautiful views of Amadablam and Taboche along the way. Pangboche is one of the highest all year round settlement in the valley. Overnight lodge.

15

TREK TO NAMCHE (3440M/11280FT) (A,B,L,D)

Today will seem more relaxed than the past few days. The trail from Pangbocheundulates along the valley side and you have fabulous views across to the mountains and Thyangboche perched on its ridge. Also, as you walk look out for Himalayan thar grazing among the boulders and lammergeyer vultures, himalayan griffon vultures and golden eagles fly overhead. Two hours further, an isolated village of Phortse lies below you, situated in a spectacular spot on a promontory overlooking the DudhKosi in one direction and the ImjaDrengka in the other (look out for musk deer and pheasants in these lovely quiet woods). After lunch, we descend down to PhunkiTenga (3250M) and climb again to Kyanjuma (3400M) to level up of Namche. The views from here are absolutely magical, particularly of AmaDablam (6,814m). Overnight lodge.

16

TREK TO LUKLA (2840M/9315FT) 7-8 HRS

Most people head towards Lukla with a heavy heart. The trail to Lukla follows the upward route as far as Chablung, and then turns off above the village of Chaunrikharka towards Lukla. The trail, leading uphill to the left, climbs steadily past a few Bhattis (small restaurant and local liquor shop) and the school. After a final steep climb there is a collection of houses and Bhattis in TamangTole, a new settlement near to Lukla. As you approach the airstrip the houses and hotels rapidly proliferate. On arrival you can finally relax and enjoy a last night in Himalaya with plenty of celebratory beers at one of the several Irish/Scottish pubs in Lukla at the same place at where you had enjoyed cups of Starbucks and/or illycoffe. Overnight Lodge.

17
