The trek passes through Goljung, Gatlang and Briddim villages. Goljung and Gatlang are traditional Tamang villages and have ancient Tamang monasteries with beautiful Parvatikunda Lake whereas Tatopani has small natural hot spring. Bahundanda and Nagathali (which used to be a popular meditation center for the local monks and priests) are surrounded by beautiful views of Langtang, Kerung, Ganesh Himal and Sanjen Himal ranges. Next is Timure on the old trade route to Tibet. A fort at Rasuwagadi in Timure is a historical reminder of the Nepal-Tibet relations that has existed for many centuries. A suspension bridge here links Nepal and Tibet. Brimdang and Britdim offers cultural experience at community-run home-stay, It is also possible to visit local monasteries of Dukchu Gomba (monastery) chosen as sacred site by the great Tibetan Lama – Guru Rinpoche and Chukla Khnaga Gomba. Khanjim & Sherpagaon links to the main Langtang Valley trekking trail –the valley of glaciers”.

The Langtang Himalayas are within easy reach of Kathmandu and yet remains one of Nepal’s hidden treasures with far less tourist traffic than the Everest and Annapurna regions. In Langtang, people are from Tibetan origin. Lama, Sherpa and Gurung are main ethnic groups.

Kyanjing Gompa is surrounded by Mt. Langtang Lirung (7245m) on the west, Yala Peak on the north, Dorje Lhakpa (6966m), Urkeinmang (6387m), Loenpo Gang (6979m) and Kangchenpo on the northeast. In Kyanjing Village, there is a small Buddhist monastery and a cheese factory started in 1955 by the Swiss Association for Technical Assistance. Our camp here amongst yak pastures, dominated by the fluted north west face of Kangchenpo, whilst Kyangjin Ri at 4510m provides a splendid viewpoint for Langtang Lirung, Pemthang Ri, Langshisha Ri, Dorje Lakpa, and Kangchenpo, Tilman’s fluted peak.

Descending from the upper Langtang Valley, we retrace the route back to Lama Hotel then take the slightly quicker way out via Bamboo and trek up to Thulo Syabru village for the side trip to the holy lakes of Gosainkunda at 4380m which is a bonus trip due to the lake’s sacredness (for Hindus as well as Buddhists). January – February, the Yolmo people (Tibetan tribe) celebrate Tibetan New Year with colorful dancing at the monasteries.

Leaving Britdim village, the trail remains high till it links to the main Langtang Valley trail at Rimche, twenty minutes closer to the Lama Hotel. The area here is still forested and again you might catch a glimpse of a red panda. After a short while the mighty peak of Langtang Lirung comes into view from the north. Passing a waterfall you continue up the west bank of the Langtang Khola and pass through the hamlet of Gumnchok. After a couple of hours the valley begins to widen and the trail flattens. You pass through Ghoda Tabela which means “stable of the horse”. You will trek past a National Park checkpoint and then cross a small wooden bridge and continue through the forest. Many villagers in this area advertise the local “yak curd” – you could try some here! Around 10,335ft/3,150m you climb above the tree-line. Approaching Langtang you will see a 400 year old Buddhist gompa (monastery) on your left and a few minutes later you climb into Langtang village itself.

Kyangjin Gompa lies in an elongated amphitheatre surrounded by high, snow-capped peaks. While you are here you may want to explore the local area. It is possible to climb the small hill to the north of the village at the height of about 14,107ft/4m. This offers great views of Langtang Lirung (23,765ft/7,245m), the Langtang glacier, Kimshing peak with its glacier and to the south, a long ridge on top of which is the Ganja La, a high pass to Helambu. Alternatively you could continue east to the valley and visit the Lagshisha glacier which marks the end of the Langtang valley. A hike to Chergo La has the best Mountain View.

After your time spent in Kyangjin Gompa, you now return down the valley. As the next two days are mostly downhill you are able to cover a lot of distance. You will gain great views returning down the valley, especially the sun flitting through the leaves once you have dropped below the tree line.

To the left of Ganesh Himal you will be able to see Manaslu and even the Annapurna including Machhapuchare (the ‘fish tail’ peak) and Annapurna II. You pass through Laurebina Yak, which means “yak without a stick”.
13

Trek to Gosainkunda Lake (4,380) 4-5 Hrs

After breakfast, the trail moves forward with a moderate climb we will reach a stupa, again with stunning views all around. The land becomes more rugged as you follow the trail passing a lake on your right called “Saraswate Kund”. After crossing the shoulder of a ridge, we descend a little and another lake comes into view. This one is called “Bhairav Kund”. In Nepali there are at least two words for lake. The most common is “tal”, however “kund” is used when a lake has a sacred property. After another short climb you crest a ridge and the sacred lake Gosainkund opens out before you.
