Lhasa and Surroundings: Lhasa and Yamdrok Tso

Five Days introductory visit to the Lhasa and surroundings covers the old town of Lhasa and it’s bazaar, museum, iconic Potala and Norbulingka Palace, Sera Monastery and well known Buddhist temples called Drepung monastery.  Lhasa (3650m), the capital of Tibet which also means “Place of the Gods”, is situated on the north bank of Kyichu River is the residence of the Dalai Lamas. Seven hours day trip to the high Kamba La (4,749m) Pass provides a perfect view point for the beautiful and colorful and crystal clear Yamtrok Tsho, photo session with Tibetan giant yaks as well as a lot of Chinese tourists is a highlight of the trip.

Arrival to Lhasa (3650m). Rest, Acclimatization and Exploration

On arrival, you will be met by the local representative either in the Lhasa Gongkar Airport (60KM to the city for an hour) or Lhasa Golmud Train station (11KM, 30 MIN) and transferred to your respective hotel. Lhasa (Place of Gods in Tibetan language) is situated on the north bank of Kyichu River which is the residence of the Dalai Lamas. Rest and acclimatization during the afternoon and exploration around the Bharkhor Street market in the evening by yourselves to observe the evening life of Lhasa as well as try some street eatery. Overnight at the hotel.

Lhasa Sightseeing

Two days in Lhasa include visiting Jokhang Temple (situated in the heart of Old Lhasa and houses Tibet’s most precious religious relic, a golden Shakyamuni Buddha which was brought as a gift by the Chinese Princess Wen Cheng on the occasion of her wedding to the Tibetan King, Songtsen Gompo), Barkhor Market Street (religious and social focus of Lhasa), Potala Palace (winter palace of Dalai Lamas which is legendary palace built atop a single hill is synonymous with Tibet by the first foremost king Songtsen Gompo.), Drepung Monastery (located at the foot of Mount Gephel and is one of the great three Gelug university Gompas of Tibet, other two being Ganden and Sera), Sera Monastery (one of Lhasa’s prettiest monasteries with a community of more than 5,000 monks used to resided here) and Norbulingka Palace (Park of Palace which is summer palace of Dalai Lamas. Visiting this palace depends on plan as most of the group joining tours don’t offer it). Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day Trip to Yamdrok Tso

After breakfast, full day picturesque drive through the Tibetan lifeline river Brahma Putra (Yarlung Tsangpo), beautiful and colorful Yamdrok-Tso Lake through green farmland of Nyangche valley with crossing over Kamba La (4,749m) high pass. The Kambala (4,749m) Pass is a perfect view point for the beautiful and colorful Yamtrok Tsho, photo session with Tibetan giant yaks as well as a lot of Chinese tourists are highlight from the top of the pass. Drive back to Lhasa for the overnight stay.

Departure from Lhasa

Early morning drive to Gonggar airport or train station for your departure flight to Kathmandu or to your onward destination to Mainland China. Trip ends!
