Drive to Banthanti (2250m), 4 Hrs

The drive to Banthanti starts from tourist town of the Lakeside district of Pokhara Valley. It is a beautiful drive in 6 lane viral Beni Baglung highway, one of the few proper highways available in Nepal. The road passes via Tibetan settlement of Hemja and rice terraces of Suikhet alongwith beautiful Naudanda viewpoint and Kande Village. The highway forks off at Nayapul and leads us to the Banthanti village. After submission our conservation permit and trekking registration certificate to the ACAP authorities (Ghandruk trail splits here), we continue our drive to Birethanti hamlet beside the Modi River. We head up the main trail to Sudame where we climb gradually up the side of the valley, reaching Hile (1495m) before pushing on to Banthanti via Tikhe Dhunga.

4

Trek to Ghorepani (2860m), 5-6 Hrs

The road continues even from Banthanti village but we start our day with the Banthanti -Ghorepani trekking. Today we spend a pleasant day’s walking, trekking through rhododendron and oak forests and across the Bhurungdi Khola stream before making a short, final climb to Nangethanti (2460m). After lunch in Nangethanti we head up to Ghorepani.

5

Climb Poonhill (3210m), 1 Hr. Sunrise. Trek continue to Chuile (2300m) Via Tadapani (2630m), 7-8 Hrs

After an early start at around 05:00 hrs, we will ascend to Poon Hill (3210m), one hour steep climb leads us to a brilliant viewpoint, providing an unobstructed sunrise over the high Himalayas. After spending half an hour on the hillside and enjoy a good cup of coffee or tea, we come back to Ghorepani, have a hot breakfast, and start walking to Chuile from Tadapani. From Ghorepani the trail climbs along ridges and through pine and rhododendron forests to Deurali (2960m). We descend to reach Banthanti, our lunch spot. After lunch, the trail climb to the Tadapani and drops down to Chuile.

6

Trek to Chhomrung (2210m), 5-6 Hrs

Dropping down from Chuile -Gurjung, the route offers good views of the upper Modi valley. The path then starts the long ascent high above the west bank of the Modi Khola. We then arrive in the village of Chhomrong (2210m) which lies tucked at the very base of Himal Chuli. Chomrong is the last permanent settlement in the valley.

7

Trek to Dovan (2540m), 6-7 Hrs

Descending to cross the Chommrong Khola River by suspension bridge, we enjoy some excellent views of Machhapuchare today (now exhibiting its distinctive ‘fishtail’ profile) and Annapurna South. We continue to climb steeply, negotiating a trail that leads us through oak and rhododendron forests until we reach a welcome teahouse on top of the ridge at Sinuwa (2350m). The ascent to Kuldigarth (2470m) is then more gradual, continuing through more lush forest to our lunch stop at the Bamboo Hotel (2340m). This afternoon we continue our ascent towards Dovan, beyond which lies the unofficial gateway into the Sanctuary, walking through wet bamboo forest to reach our accommodation later this afternoon. Ascent 750m/ descent 550m. Overnight teahouse.

8

Trek to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3720m), 6-7 Hrs

The track continues up past the so-called ‘weeping wall’ and the shrine to the ‘God of the Jungle’, to the Himalaya Hotel (2840m). Passing several spectacular waterfalls which cascade down the opposite side of the Modi Khola, we climb through bamboo forest to reach Hinku Cave at 3100m. Crossing to Deorali (3140m) for lunch, we then climb further to pass between Machhapuchare and Huinchuli – the ‘Gates’ into the Sanctuary. Climbing over rocky moraine we arrive at Machhapuchare Base Camp (3720m) later this afternoon. Overshadowed by Annapurna South and the beautiful shape of Machhapuchare (machha, fish’ and puchare, ‘tail’), one of Nepal’s holy mountains, this is a quite awe-inspiring setting in which to end our day’s trekking, the mountain landscapes providing us with a sight to raise the spirits of even the most tired amongst us. Ascent 1090m. Overnight teahouse.

9

Annapurna Base Camp (4130m), Trek Back to Deurali (3230m), 7-8 Hrs

We spend the morning enjoying the views within the very heart of the sanctuary. Having made a ‘crack of dawn’ start to get the best of the day, we follow part of the route taken by British mountaineer Chris Bonnington on the 1970 Annapurna South Face Expedition. Following west along a moraine to the north of Hiunchuli, we reach several stone buildings at 4130m and then ascend to a spectacular viewpoint. Here we have amazing views of the peaks encircling us including close up views of the South face of Annapurna I which towers over the Sanctuary and also of Annapurna South glacier. We will have time to enjoy this special mountain panorama, to sit amongst the edelweiss and watch the ice carving its way from the glacier, before an afternoon descent to overnight at the Himalaya Hotel. Total walking: Approx 7 hours. Ascent 430m/descent 1320m. Overnight teahouse.
