Gokyo Valley Trek

annapurna basecamp small

Retrace the footsteps of Tibetan people who walk down to Namche to trade their productions with salts. This is a combination of trekking into Gokyo Valley as well as Nangpa La Valley via Renjo La Pass. The Pass itself is considered one of the best in terms of having unobstructed views including Mount Everest. The tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang is one of the most dramatic attractions of the Gokyo Valley. The most wonderful experience would be to explore this area during the end of monsoon season when flowers blooms in Nangpa La giving the trekkers the illusion of walking on textured carpet.
Namche, the most prosperous and largest Sherpa village in Khumbu, offers you an epic view of Everest panorama, unique experience of the Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, and unparalleled beauty. Afterwards, we will traverse beautiful fir, juniper and rhododendron forests in Sagarmatha National Park.

Itinerary Detail

DETAILS OF ITINERARY

DAY 01: ARRIVE KATHMANDU
Airport representative of Mountain Consultant Treks & Adventure will receive you and transfer by private vehicle to the hotel. Leisure day to adjust with altitude, weather and time difference as well as to take rest from jetlags. to the culture shock of medieval Kathmandu, with its bustling bazaars interspersed with shrines and temples and interesting architecture. In the evening you can either eat in at your hotel or venture out to one of the many restaurants in Thamel. Overnight at hotel

DAY 02: WALKING TOUR IN KATHMANDU 3 HRS
Walking tour of Kathmandu's cultural heritage sites listed by UNESCO for 3 hours including Kathmandu Durbar Square, Monkey Temple & local markets towards South of Thamel. Later part of the rest of the day is for trekking permit (TIMS), national park permit and final packing for the trekking.

DAY 03: FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO JORSALLE (2805M/9200FT) VIA PHAKDING (2610M/8560FT) 5-6 HRS
An early departure from the Kathmandu domestic airport will see us landing in Lukla a mere 35 minutes later, at the start of our journey to the Mount Everest Base Camp. This is one of the most spectacular and one of the 10th extreme flights in the world. As you fly east, the snow line of the Himalayan range to the north, will be on your left, with the rugged foothills of Nepal immediately below and stretching away to the south on your right. Lukla is situated high above the river on a shelf at 2,800m, and arriving there is a one off experience because the runway is on a slope and there is a difference of almost 60 metres between its lower and upper ends which all makes for an interesting landing! On arrival you can have a cup of tea to warm yourself up while your staffs sort out your baggage. Following cup of tea at Lukla, our trek will commence with a moderate walk to the junction of the Jiri trail at Chablung and from here we shall follow the Dudh Koshi River through the village of Ghat, and eventually to Phakding (2610m), three hours to the north. The path leads upstream along the valley, through areas of conifer trees and several more small villages. Another 2-3 hours walking will bring you to Chuma, Monjo and finally to Jorsalle, a picturesque village with several options of lodges, groceries and located below Thamserku Mountain (6,608m) at an altitude of 2805m/9200ft. We are trekking inside Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park the UNESCO listed Natural World Heritage Site already.

DAY 04: TREK TO KHUMJUNG (3790M/12430FT) VIA NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440M/11280FT) 6 HRS
A principal benefit of walking as far as Jorsalle on the first day is that you can walk up the steep hill to Namche. Since Namche is a stopover of every tourist, overnight stop at Khumjung is smart idea of avoiding touristic crowd of Namche as well as option of acclimatization. Shortly after leaving Jorsalle, we walk on alongside the river to arrive at the confluence of the Imja Drangka and the Nangpo Drangpo, which combine to form the Dudh Khosi. Crossing the river on a high bridge you start the steep climb to Namche. Near the halfway point up the hill, we catch our first glimpse of the mighty Mount Everest and Lhotse, away to the northeast. Namche is the largest and most prosperous village in the Khumbu. Thamserku (6,608m) and Kwangde (6,224m) loom to the east and west and the sacred mountain Khumbila (5,707m) dominates the skyline to the north behind the village. The narrow streets at its centre are a mixture of traditional and modern, with Sherpa homes mingled with cafes, handicraft shops and shops selling or renting trekking and climbing equipment, foodstuffs and vegetables, tennis shoes and Tibetan boots. Don't be surprised if, after the exertion of the climb and the rise in elevation, you feel a little tired and head-ache. You will feel better after a cup of tea and a rest. Overnight lodge

DAY 05: REST DAY AND ACCLIMATIZATION DAY
In order to assist with acclimatization, we will spend another day Khumjung. This rest day would be good for acclimatization as you would end up sleeping lower than you have climbed during the day – it is a mantra of good acclimatization to 'climb high, sleep low'. Everest View Hotel is perfect spot to enjoy a cup of tea or a hot lemon while looking out at Everest and other Himalayan giants whereas visiting the clinic in Khunde and the Khumjung School to observe Hillary's work (supported by the Himalayan Trust) on Khumbu region is other stuff to do. The picturesque Gompa in Khumjung, set in a grove of trees above the houses of the village, is also well worth a visit which is famous for so-called yeti scalp. It is possible to climb the ridge above Khunde, to 4,238m, to view Mount Everest and Ama Dablam. You could also visit the memorial to Sir Edmund Hillary's wife and daughter who were tragically killed in an air accident. Overnight lodge

DAY 06: TREK TO DOLE (4200M/14295FT) 5-6 HRS

Soon after leaving Khumjung, the trail is almost level-stretched and abruptly the passage ascends on a staircase made of rocks embedded in a narrow cleft in a large boulder climbs continuously towards a large chhorten (smaller version of Stupa) on top of a ridge which descends from Khumbila, a 5761m peak, said to be a abode of the patron God of the Khumbu region. The trail descends slightly towards the Sanasa and then trail ascends up to Mongla (3985m), a birthplace of Lama Sange Dorje. He is a Tibetan saint, the reincarnate Lama of Ronbuk monastery in Tibet who introduced Buddhism to Khumbu. From here, we will be able to see panoramic views of various mountains.

From Mong La, the trail descends in steep switchbacks down a sandy slope to the Dudh Koshi river for a short period through Phortse Tenga (3680m). After having delicious lunch here, the trail climbs steeply to Dole, passes a herder's hut at Tongba, through rhododendron and birch forest festooned with hanging mosses and lichens. Dole has few lodges and predominant views of Khumbila and Tawache. From here on it's possible to climb a ridge behind Dole for a broader view up and down the valley.

DAY 07: TREK TO MACHHERMA (4480M/14695FT) 4-5 HRS (A,B,L,D)
A relatively shorter but altitude is gained in short period of time in the beginning. The route is steep in a few places as it climbs through scrub junipers and along the way, Kharkas (yak's pastureland) are seen wherever there is a flat spot and the slightest hint of water. The trail carries on to climb along the side of the valley, high above the river, traversing sandy spurs. The trail passes many summer settlements, which are used when yaks are taken to these pastures to graze in the summer. Ahead of you, an excellent views of Cho Oyu, while back down the valley are the peaks of Kangtega and Thamserku.

Machherma is a place where 'a yeti killed three yaks and attacked a Sherpa girl', the most credible yeti incident ever reported in Khumbu.

DAY 09: AT GOKYO: CLIMB GOKYO RI & EXPLORE AROUND FORTH LAKE: 6-7 HRS (A,B,L,D)
Gokyo – Gokyo Ri – Tagnag. It's an early start as we climb to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5483m) to watch the sunrise over a stunning vista of the regions 8000m peaks including the mighty Everest. Later we continue our journey, crossing a glacier to reach Tagnag, our overnight resting place. Overnight - Tagnag (Lodge) (B, L, D)

DAY 10: TREK TO LUNGDEN (4600M/15088FT) VIA CROSSING RENJO LA (5360M/17580FT) 7-8 HRS (A,B,L,D)
DAY 11: TREK TO THAME (3800M/12465FT) 6-7 HRS (A,B,L,D)
DAY 12: TREK TO BENGKAR (2805M/9200FT) 6-7 HRS (A,B,L,D)

DAY 13: TREK TO LUKLA (2840M/9315FT) 5-6 HRS (A,B,L,D)
Most people head towards Lukla with a heavy heart. The trail to Lukla follows the upward route as far as Chablung, and then turns off above the village of Chaunrikharka towards Lukla. The trail, leading uphill to the left, climbs steadily past a few Bhattis (small restaurant and local liquor shop) and the school. After a final steep climb there is a collection of houses and Bhattis in Tamang Tole, a new settlement near to Lukla. As you approach the airstrip the houses and hotels rapidly proliferate. On arrival you can finally relax and enjoy a last night in Himalaya with plenty of celebratory beers at one of the several Irish/Scottish pubs in Lukla at the same place at where you had enjoyed cups of Starbucks and/or illy coffee. Overnight Lodge

DAY 14: FLY TO KATHMANDU
Another chance to enjoy this adrenaline flight. Please note that flights into Lukla are sometimes delayed due to weather conditions either in fog-bound Kathmandu or Lukla; be reassured that our staff in Lukla and in Kathmandu will be doing everything possible to minimize the inconvenience caused if this happens. Your patience in the trying circumstances, which can occur, will be greatly appreciated. On arrival in Kathmandu you will be met and transferred to the hotel.

DAY 15: AT LEISURE IN KATHMANDU
An opportunity to relax and reflect on your adventures and to complete any sightseeing and last-minute shopping. Overnight in hotel.

DAY 16: ONWARD DESTINATION
Breakfast at hotel in the morning. We will serve you appropriate vehicle to transfer you to Kathmandu International Airport for your onward destination.
